Card Game that is a Cult Classic
In the hail of modern entertainment options it is easy to get sucked into all the handheld games, streaming videos, and endless broadcast channels available to consumers. Every now and then it pays to unplug and take a few steps down the technological ladder to enjoy a simpler time. Make way for the Munchkin series of card games. For those of you who have not subjected your friends to a night of nerding out over a table full of strategic, fantasy-based card combat, I can only assume you are too busy writing manuals for your own fantasy-based rpgs. For the rest of us there is a ready-made solution in the form of Munchkin Cthulhu.
What stands out right away is the humorous take on Lovecraft that is inherent in the artwork. There are familiar creatures and items from the Lovecraft Mythos rendered with clean lines and cute yet maniacal precision. You also have your traditional class types in your Investigators and Professors, but this game caters specifically to the Lovecraft masses by allowing (and sometimes cursing you) to be Cultists. This class has bonus granted to it based on the number of active Cultists in the game. In a cruel twist of fate, if you are enticed or ensnared into joining the cultist class, you cannot voluntarily change to another class. This kind of devoted fan service is one of the reasons I thoroughly enjoyed playing my first round of Munchkin. I think the other reasons had something to do with cursing my friends, unleashing monsters on them, and wanting to play again even after I got beat the first game. The next time you are sitting around with your friends deliberating the myriad of options laid out before you, consider reaching for a low-tech solution and give Munchkin Cthulhu a go. And for those of you needing to add some fangle-dangled high tech component to your gameplay, there is even a Munchkin iPhone app that tracks your levels, rolls a virtual die, and gives you bonus items to give you an edge over your less technologically gifted ilk.

The Movies and H.P. Lovecraft: Hollywood Has Not Been Kind to the Horror Master
This article features a brief filmography of Lovecraft's transition from the page to the screen. This list has its share of duds as well as stand-outs. Re-Animator is definitely more camp than horror, but was successful in briefly bringing Lovecraft to a mainstream audience. I personally enjoyed Dagon and In the Mouth of Madness for the atmosphere they create that at times succeeds in capturing that elusive essence of foreboding that the written works are known for. One movie that I am definitely looking forward to is The Whisperer in the Darkness from the minds over at the HP Lovecraft Historical Society.

Into the Vaults...
We are presenting material that while technically not new, we thought it wise to include it on our site. If there is anything you think deserves coverage or any questions you have for us, please let us know. Any feedback you provide will be passed on to our correspondent Nyarlathotep who will then carry your concern to Azatoth. It may be a while before we hear back, as the forces of chaos are not bound by our concepts of time and space.
